Conversation about voter suppression with Keesha Gaskins-Nathan

by | August 19, 2022 | Upcoming Events us on September 13th for a virtual conversation on voter suppression with Keesha Gaskins-Nathan.

As the Rockefeller Brothers Fund director for Democratic Practice US and the Racial Justice Initiative, Ms Gaskins-Nathan is “dedicated to advancing measures and ideas that improve democratic systems and engage democratic culture in the United States.” Before joining the Fund, she was senior counsel to the Brennan Center, executive director of the League of Women Voters Minnesota, and a trial attorney, among other endeavors. She frequently appears as a commentator on public affairs programs, including PBS’s NewsHour and Bill Moyers.

We’ve all heard and read about widespread fraudulent claims that the 2020 presidential election was rigged; self-styled patriots across the country and in our state are promoting these lies about election security with the aim of suppressing the vote. Motivated by the same lies, many state legislatures are discussing and passing anti-democratic laws designed to limit the franchise of vulnerable groups. Some agitators are even encouraging harassment of election officials and volunteers, driving many to resign their positions or cease to volunteer. These include our neighbors we’re used to seeing at polling places when we vote.

Ms Gaskins-Nathan will discuss these destructive voter suppression efforts across the country and in Minnesota, and will explore strategies for defending our democracy against them.

Co-hosts: League of Women Voters Minnesota | Common Cause Minnesota | Minnesota Council of Nonprofits | Minnesota Council on Foundations | FairVote Minnesota | Minnesota Voice | Indivisible MN03 | Edina Indivisible | Plymouth Area Indivisible | St. Croix Valley Indivisible | Indivisible Saint Paul
